Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and learning at work. You can earn as you learn and develop practical skills from the workplace, making them one of the best ways to get your foot on the first rung of your chosen career ladder. There are two options for you to choose from if you become an apprentice with us:
- Business Administration
- Horticulture
For Business Administration roles, please contact Barnsley College Business Support Unit on 01226 216544. Alternatively, please contact Barnsley Council Human Resources on 01226 773735.
Benefits of Apprenticeships
There are a number of reasons to choose an apprenticeship. Our schemes offer you the chance to gain:
- Recognised National Vocational Qualifications – you’ll be given release to attend college
- Technical certificates (dependent on framework)
- Key skills
- Valuable experience within a work environment
We make sure that our apprentices are employed within specific areas of the council for a fixed period of time. This helps you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge you’ll need to do that particular job. More importantly, you’ll also be able to build up a strong portfolio of evidence to prove it too.
Do I get paid?
Yes, our apprentices do get paid as they train.
Our business administration apprentices receive a basic wage of around £95 per week, as they prepare for an office-based career within our clerical, customer service, financial or environmental teams.
Our horticultural apprentices receive a minimum basic wage of around £144 per week on entry, as they work towards becoming a Gardener or Groundsworker.
