Health and wellbeing

We spend a fair amount of time doing our job, so it’s important that we have the best possible environment in which to do it. At Barnsley Council, we have an essential role to play, and do all we can to ensure that the staff that work for us are ‘healthy, happy and here’

Employee wellbeing

The Council is committed to improving and maintaining the overall wellbeing of its staff. The Council’s employee wellbeing programme is an holistic approach with the key determinants being having a safe working environment, good communications, flexible working practices, effective and fair line management and the team support that people need to meet the challenges they face at work.

Health promotion activities are organised that are aimed at educating and encouraging staff, raising the awareness of lifestyle issues ranging from diet and exercise to mental health promotion. Staff can also benefit from reduced membership rates at local gyms.

If you would like to know more about the ways we’re helping our staff, visit the Barnsley ‘employee wellbeing’  website.

Occupational Health

Our Occupational Health team is here to promote a high level of physical, mental and social wellbeing at work. We can advise on fitness to work, offer confidential counselling, make adjustments for those needing support after illness, and assess and assist in the control of the working environment, eg. workstation assessments.

We also work with other health providers such as GPs, consultants, physiotherapists, counsellors, the Health and Safety Executive and alternative therapy practitioners to guarantee that we give only the very best advice.

WorkStyle

WorkStyle helps to create a professional and pleasant work environment – and is crucial for the council’s modernisation. We combine the latest office accommodation, working practices, information management and technology to benefit the public, the council and its people. Where possible, we also enable and encourage new ways of working, for example from home. Collaborating with all areas of the council and its partners, we’re taking significant steps towards even smarter working.
